Movie Mavens

Do you love watching and discussing great movies? So do we!

Movie Mavens is a very popular activity at our synagogue, with a history of many animated and interesting group discussions. Our goal is to expand participation Synagogue-wide. Our current format is to watch the selected movie at home, every couple of months, and then join a discussion on Zoom on a Sunday morning at 11am.

Our August movie was 'Carl Laemmle', a documentary about the life of the original "Uncle Carl Laemmle, who founded Universal Studios and whose descendants were movie produces and opened the Laemmle chain of movie theaters in Los Angeles. Carl was, above all, a humanitarian, who provided a large number of European Jews with affidavits of support so they could escape from the Nazis.

During Yom Kippur afternoon, we watched and discussed "Never Stop Dreaming: The Life and Legacy of Shimon Peres", a look back on the life of Nobel Peach Prize winner, Shimon Peres, who served as prime minister of Israel twice and negotiated the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty.

Movie Mavens discussions are currently held using Zoom. Until we have in-person screenings and discussions, we are looking into options to watch the movie on a shared screen.
