High Holy Days

High Holy Day services at The Santa Monica Synagogue are exceptionally moving.  We begin the “The Days of Awe” several days prior to Rosh Hashanah with a S’lichot service under the stars.  Our cantor leads us in prayer with accompaniment by a harpist, and our rabbi offers words which prepare us for the task of repentance.

For Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we use the groundbreaking prayer book, “Gates of Light.”   With its modern interpretations of the prayers, we have the opportunity to connect deeply to the prayers of these holiest days.  Accompanied by piano, our cantor and choir fill the sanctuary with beautiful sounds of prayerful music.  Our rabbi’s sermons are moving, powerful, and warm.

Tashlich on the Beach

On Rosh Hashanah afternoon, we gather on the beach for Tashlich, an ancient ceremony in which our sins are symbolically cast into the sea.    The weather is always great as over 700 of us – congregants and friends – come together to say farewell to the old year and usher in the new one.

One year, we wrote our failings down on paper and a scuba diver emerged from the water to bear them away.  Another year, we wrote on edible newsprint and a goat came down the shore to gobble up our mistakes.  In yet another, the air was filled with the sound of drums, as we welcomed in the New Year with rhythmic precision!
