High Holy Days Registration 2022

August 2022

Dear Friends,

I’m thrilled to be joining you as The Santa Monica Synagogue’s Rabbi for our first High Holy Days together.  I look forward to a communal exploration of meaningful ritual and prayer. Please see below for specifics about our collective journey from preparation to self-reflection, from remembrance to repentance, from returning to rejoicing.  Our holy goal is to look deep within ourselves, take an accounting of our souls, redirect our courses where we have gone astray, rededicate ourselves to living lives of meaning and purpose, and emerge grateful and reinvigorated. I look forward to sharing the pulpit with Cantor Toby Schwartz, who will be joining us again, as well as our dedicated synagogue choir!

We will be returning to The First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica at 1008 11th Street (corner of 11th Street and Washington Avenue) for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services. Sukkot and Simchat Torah services will be at The Santa Monica Synagogue at 1448 18th Street.

Shana tova u’m’tukah! (May you have a good and sweet New Year!)

Rabbi Shira Freidlin

COVID PROTOCOL
The Santa Monica Synagogue will follow the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s COVID guidelines for large indoor gatherings in effect at the time of services.
We recommend wearing masks and testing the day(s) you attend services in-person.

TICKETS

For Members:
Once we’ve received your membership renewal, complimentary tickets will be provided for you and your immediate family members (7th grade and up, living at home with you).  Your ticket includes all adult services and our Rosh Hashanah morning program for children and families, Apples & Funny. Tickets may be picked up at the synagogue office and will be available at the will call table at the church for each service.

If you wish to have your adult children (not living at home with you) or other relatives attend our service, tickets are $100 per person. Please contact the Treasurer (treasurer@thesms.org) if there are special circumstances that necessitate a reduction in ticket price.

If you wish to have friends join our services, guest tickets are $200 each.

Please make sure your membership renewal and your requests for extra tickets are received by September 12th. For security reasons, each person must present a ticket for each service.

Please note that all services will also be streamed live on Zoom, Facebook and YouTube.
Visit thesms.org website for streaming information.

PARKING
Underground parking is available in the Senior Housing building directly across 11th Street from the church. During the day, please do not park on the first level of the underground parking lot. While we realize parking spaces in the underground structure are narrow, as a courtesy to other congregants, please park within the lines so you don’t take up two spaces. If you park on the street, please be aware of 2-hour permit parking zones, particularly on California Ave., as well as street cleaning restricted parking.

TASHLICH
Our Tashlich service will be held near Lifeguard station 26 on the beach in Santa Monica at the corner of Ocean Park Boulevard and Barnard Way on Monday, September 26th at 4:00. Please remember to bring $15 for parking—exact change is appreciated. Parking lot entrance is on Barnard Way ½ block south of Ocean Park Blvd.

PRAYER BOOKS
We will be using the Mishkan HaNefesh prayer books. We are offering the two-book set (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) for sale to congregants and guests for $36. Books may be purchased at the synagogue during office hours, as well as at the church. Members and former members who previously purchased Book Plates to honor family and relatives will be offered free the sets containing their plates.

Note that prayer books will continue to be provided at in-person services at the church for members and guests who choose not to purchase their own set. Kindle e-reader copies are also available here.

CHAI CONTRIBUTION
Each household is asked to contribute at least Chai ($18) toward the costs of the High Holy Days.

DONATIONS TO SOVA
At this challenging time, when so many are suffering financially, emotionally and physically, please consider a donation to SOVA, a Jewish Family Services food pantry. For a direct donation of groceries, call 310-288-0286; for a donation to JFS, click here.

HIDUR MITZVAH CONTRIBUTIONS
The Jewish custom of Hidur Mitzvah (embellishment) helps to beautify and enrich our High Holy Day services. Please make your donations, in whatever amount you choose, on the Hidur Mitzvah Donation forms below by September 12th.

YIZKOR BOOK
For Members:
Yizkor is a time when we bring to mind all of our loved ones and friends who have died. It you wish to have an additional name(s) listed in our Yizkor book that you did not submit previously, please fill out that information in the form below. Names submitted in previous years will be included automatically. Please note there is a separate section in the book for those who have died during the past year.
All names must be submitted by September 12th.

CHILDREN’S PARTICIPATION
To help school age children begin to experience some of the majesty of the High Holy Days, and to familiarize them with High Holy Day songs and melodies (Kol Nidre, Aveinu Malkeinu), we strongly encourage you to bring them to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur evening services.

We are pleased to offer a special children’s and family program, Apples and Funny -- a Rosh Hashana comedy -- for children and adults from 10:30 am – noon in-person at the church on Monday, September 26.  Admission to the program is included in the purchase of High Holy Day tickets.  Should you wish to attend the Apples and Funny program only, tickets are $25 per family.  All children must be accompanied by an adult. Everyone who attends this special program must register below.

We invite families to join us on Rosh Hashanah afternoon at the beach near Lifeguard station 26 for our outdoor ceremony of Tashlich. This service will follow Los Angeles County Department of Public Health COVID guidelines for outdoor gatherings current at the time of the service.
